Narrow Arroe Project Update :: Poster Run
Been crazy slammed lately. Between my 8 to 5 and the freelance load, I have barely had time to breath, much less get this thing updated with project posts. Things are finally starting to settle though and I’m excited about what lies ahead. Charmie and I have been busting away on the upcoming store and I have also been combining efforts with Peter Gaillard on a collaborative studio venture. Good stuff coming from both directions.
Here are some of the funner projects I’ve shelled out over the past few weeks for Transmission Entertainment and Gorilla Vs Bear. A few different posters for FunFunFun Fest afterparties and another for an upcoming Phanotogram show.

BASS CENTER III :: Poster Contest
This is a poster I designed over the weekend for the Creative Allies’ Bassnectar contest. They will choose two winners to receive a pair of tickets to the next Bass Center event in San Francisco, as well a cash-money prize of $400. I took the long holiday weekend as a good opportunity to experiment with shapes, patterns, color, and really just have fun pushing the boundaries past the type of work I usually end up making. I learned some new Illustrator tricks and had mucho fun making it.

Ditch The Fest Fest 2 Poster Design

I created this new poster design for an upcoming festival here in Austin, called Ditch The Fest Fest. It’s a free festival put on by Lucy The Poodle, and it runs on the same Saturday of ACL. Charmie and I went to the first one last year and we had a blast. Lots of great local music. Check out more details here: Ditch The Fest Fest II

Tennessee Whiskey :: A Letterpressed Poster Documentary
Really cool short on the making of a Jack Daniel’s print by Yee-Haw Industries in Knoxville. The banjo, along with that slow pouring of Jack into the black ink, really reminds me of home. Looking forward to my visit in a couple of weeks.

Bonnie MacLean + Wes Wilson

I saw a few of these posters on display at the Hard Rock Casino last month, and was instantly attracted to how fluid and saturated they were. I didn’t know who the artists were until just a couple of days ago, but now I am definatlely inspired to move away from the computer and back to the hand sketched basics for my next poster.
The first two images are the works of fine artist Bonnie MacLean. In the mid-to-late 60′s Bonnie helped her husband, promoter Bill Graham, with just about everything involved in operating San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium, from blowing up balloons to counting money. She also designed the upcoming events chalkboard in the Fillmore lobby. “The blackboards gave me the idea she could do posters,” Graham said, “and when [Wes Wilson, last two posters] left, Bonnie took over.”
Using Wilson’s style as inspiration, MacLean played with lettering and often focused her design on the facial expressions of detached-looking figures.

Matthew Shlian’s Tesselation Series

Matthew Shlian works within the increasingly nebulous space between art and engineering. As a paper engineer, Shlian’s work is rooted in print media, book arts, and commercial design, though he frequently finds himself collaborating with a cadre of scientists and researchers who are just now recognizing the practical connections between paper folding and folding at microscopic and nanoscopic scales.

Ghostland Screenprint

I designed my first poster for screen print a couple of weeks ago, and was really pleased with how the prints turned out. Under Pressure did a fantastic job. I was surprised at how easy to work with and helpful they were. I will definitely be coming back to them for future work. Well, for multi-color projects anyways. I’ve been wanting to build a simple set up here at the apartment so I can handle the simpler one to two-color projects on the fly. I just need to quit fooling around and get to building!
